How Our Passion for the Dobermann Breed Began
Would you like to know how our love for Dobermanns started? Here's the story…
"It all began many years ago, during my senior year of high school. Every day, I walked 45 minutes from school to the bus station along the Adige River in Verona, Italy. One afternoon, I noticed an elderly man walking on the opposite side of the street with a striking black dog. I had never seen a dog so beautiful—its coat shimmered in the sunlight, and it moved with elegance and attentiveness, clearly devoted to its owner.
Curious and captivated, I began researching to find out what breed this magnificent dog was. I found the answer in a canine encyclopedia: it was a Dobermann. And from that moment, the dream began.
As a full-time student, money was tight. So, I made a bold decision—I sold my beloved Gilera 124 motorcycle to buy my first Dobermann puppy. I was fortunate to share this passion with my girlfriend Paola, who later became my wife. That summer, she worked tirelessly in her father's company to save enough to buy a second Dobermann puppy.
Our early experiences were challenging. The puppies we bought didn’t meet our expectations in terms of quality. We were inexperienced, and unfortunately, someone took advantage of that. But instead of giving up, we chose to learn. We studied the breed standard, visited renowned kennels, and attended Dobermann special events across Germany, Austria, Holland, France, and Scandinavia.
Soon, we began meeting respected breeders who generously shared their knowledge. Our understanding and experience grew, and so did our vision: to breed Dobermans that excelled in both conformation shows and working trials. Our goal was to produce dogs that embodied structural functional beauty, protective instincts, and exceptional working ability—true to the original spirit of the Dobermann.
In 1995, we moved to the United States after winning the Visa Lottery, which allowed us to live and work there. Interestingly, the Dobermann breed played a key role in this life-changing decision. In spring 1994, architect Gero Müller and his wife Carla—friends and fellow Dobermann enthusiasts—invited us to visit Seattle, Washington State. Gero, a breeder and vice president of the German Dobermann Club, had previously allowed me to use his famous stud male in my breeding program. That trip opened our eyes to the American approach to breeding and showing dogs, and we were deeply impressed by the professionalism and passion of the handlers.
Now, after more than 30 years in Washington State, we are proud of the quality of our Dobermanns and grateful for the journey we've taken. Much of the credit goes to my wife Paola—her dedication is unmatched. She lovingly raises each litter, feeding puppies every few hours, day and night. Her keen eye for evaluating type, temperament and structure has been essential to our success.
We also believe that the divine guidance of our Creator and Lord has played a role in our journey. We listened to the inspirations and with humility, wisdom and reflection, we’ve carefully selected bloodlines and breeding partners, always striving to improve. After nearly 50 years in the sport, we continue to breed Dobermans that reflect the best of the breed—loyal protectors, cherished companions, and outstanding working dogs."
